Quebec Art Company to put on Lend Me A Tenor

Opera manager Henry Saunders (Ladd Johnson) can’t keep his boss Julia Leverett (Anne Letellier) or the hotel bellhop (Bill Russell) away from his star tenor, Tito Merelli (Simon Harvey).

Quebec Art Company (QAC), Quebec City’s only English-language community theatre, is having a blast preparing for this spring’s production, Ken Ludwig’s comedy Lend Me A Tenor.

Lovers of classic farce theatre at its best shouldn’t miss this one. Originally produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber at the West End in the mid 80’s, the play subsequently saw its success on Broadway, winning two Tony Awards.

QAC director Cheryl Rimmer has had her eye on this play for quite some time. “Timing is everything,” she states, and the QAC seems ready for this one! According to Rimmer, Lend Me A Tenor is a fast-paced “physical comedy” with lots of doors opening and closing (or slamming), comings and goings, mistaken identity, and marital mishaps – all in typical farce style: exaggerated, extravagant, absurd, and with plenty of plot twists to keep you amused, bemused, and perhaps confused.

The on-stage efforts are balanced by the off-stage crew, who are as numerous as the actors in this production. Costumes are being sewn, new set doors and supporting walls are being built, and set design is underway to ensure all the lovely stage details are there – all by local talent involved. A true community theatre group!

Performances are on Friday and Saturday, April 25th and 26th at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 27th at 2:00 p.m. at the Holland School, 940, Avenue Ernest-Gagnon, Quebec City. Reservations are encouraged by phoning 418-254-6552 (available approx. 2 weeks before opening). $12 general, $10 65+ and -18.
