Québec Celtic Festival Underway

Quebec City (Quebec) September 3, 2014 – According to organisers of the 9th annual Festival celtique de Québec (Quebec Celtic Festival), the people of Québec are more Celtic than Latin, and they’re hoping this idea will catch on as the festival continues to grow year after year.

Indeed, as most “de souche” Québécois have origins in northern France, their ancestry is much more likely to have Celtic origins than they might think. The villages of Astérix and Obélix were very decidedly not Latin, after all. Add to this the healthy mix of immigration from the British Isles (particularly Ireland) and Québec’s Celitc origins are strong. Our traditional music and clothing have a decidedly Celtic twist.

Offering a wide range of historical, cultural, musical, and culinary events (including plenty of whisky), the festival is also betting on several new sporting events this year in order to attract the Celtic and curious from all over Québec and north-eastern North America. In particular, one of this year’s headline events is a Kilt Run, a fun run in which participants are given an iconic Scottish pleated skirt – fashionable on men as well as women – simply for participating.

The festival’s growing Highland Games is also sure to impress onlookers with feats of strength of Scottish tradition. These events draw large crowds throughout North America, but are relatively unknown in Québec’s French-speaking areas. As festival organiser Guy Morisset points out, “Québec has a long-standing culture of strong man competitions.  There’s no reason French Québécois couldn’t perform on these North American circuits and build reputations for themselves.”

For those less physically-inclined, the festival is also a great chance to hear Celtic-origin music both traditional and modern. There’s truly something for everyone, from the wistful songs of bygone eras to Celtic music intertwined with modern rock and punk styles.

The Festival celtique de Québec continues until September 7th. A full program can be found here.
