Quebec City and Montréal unveil Ski Tour Canada courses

Québec City, Tuesday, November 3, 2015 – With less than five months to go until the world’s biggest Cross-Country Skiing event of the 2015-2016 season, the Ski Tour Canada 2016 courses for Montréal and Québec City have now been unveiled!

Organizing committees are working flat out to put on the event that will decide the winners of the prestigious FIS (Fédération internationale de Ski) crystal globes from March 1 to 12, 2016. With four countries officially signed up to date, more than 25 nations will come to Canada to showcase over 150 of the world’s top athletes.

A first for Montréal
The second Ski Tour Canada stage—the Montréal event—will be held on March 2 on Mont-Royal with a 13-22 km race. It promises to be quite the event: the classical technique mass start will be the first classical style event on the tour and the only one of its kind in Québec. “It’s vital that skiers position themselves well in the peloton because the course becomes quite narrow in places and passing will require a great deal of strategy,” explains Patrice Drouin, president of Gestev, which is producing the Montréal and Québec City stages. “The crowds gathered along the course are in for a treat!”

Québec City: Make mine a double
After a well-deserved rest day, Québec City sees the Cross Country World Cup return downtown with two events featuring two separate courses, both of which start on the Plains of Abraham: the sprint free on March 4 and the 10-15 km pursuit free technique on March 5. The two courses overlap and will treat the audience to spectacular views as local athletes aim for a podium finish. There’s one key difference from 2012: the sprint 2016 course will be even more physically demanding… with more climbs, more distance to cover, an impressive hill 400 m from the finish line along the city walls, a start on the Plains, and a stretch that takes in Québec’s National Assembly, Fontaine de Tourny, and Porte Saint-Louis!
