Quebec City Winter Pentathlon 2011

Sportsmen from the past return to the Plains of Abraham

Québec, 2011 – For a fourth consecutive year, the National Battlefields Commission, is happy to welcome on the Plains of Abraham the Winter Pentathlon, the remarkable winter sports event, to be held next January 29 to February 27.

And who better than the friendly Amédée Fournier, a snowshoer from this past century, to inspire these valiant sportsmen and women?

On February 19, a team of outstanding personalities from this past century will participate in the events involving running, snowshoeing, ice skating, cycling and cross-country skiing, during the Winter Pentathlon Corporate Challenge. This exceptional team will be representing the Plains of Abraham with determination and daring. Joe Malone, Quebec Bulldogs’ star player and twice winner of the Stanley Cup, will take part in the skating race while displaying the colours of the club.

As for Arthur Duquette, the son of one of the first Québec City velocipede champions, will take up the challenges of cross-country skiing and cycling. Finally, Amédée Fournier, who usually leads the park’s visitors in an old-time snowshoe walk, will leave his occupations temporarily to take his place on the starting line for the running race and, naturally, the snowshoeing events. He will also take part in the Snowshoe Challenge on January 29, the first race of its kind within the framework of the Pentathlon.

A member of the “snowshoeing fans” club of l’Union commerciale, Amédée Fournier invites history and outdoor enthusiasts to put on their caps, mittens, arrow sashes and traditional snowshoes and join him in the park, in the not so distant past of winter sports and leisure activities.

The Snowshoer’s Walk will allow you to rediscover the conquest of the Stanley Cup by the Quebec Bulldogs, ski jumping, ski jorring, winter strolls, and lots more. A recreational outing that will make you shiver with delight… and let’s not forget the hot chocolate. So, how about a stroll under the stars? Join us on January 29, February 4, 11 and 12 (in English), and February 26 and March 5 (in French).
