Years ago there used to be a television series called the Flying Doctors’ out of Australia, and it appears like the real thing is showing up in our own skies over the province. The Quebec Government has just taken delivery of its first flying hospital.

The plane is a Bombardier Challenger which has been equipped with every possible medical apparatus available, to serve as an actual hospital to reach those remote areas where no medical services are available.

The Government makes it clear that it is more than a flying ambulance used to transport patients to the nearest hospital. It’s an actual medical emergency centre where x-rays can be taken, patients can be monitored, emergency heart attack procedures performed and respiratory solutions can be implemented either while in the air or on the ground.

The plane can can carry three patients at a time and even has an incubator for any birth complications that could arrive in flight.
Quebec province has a vast area not served by sufficient hospitals like the Great North, the Northern Coast, the Magdalen Islands, among others.

Québec already has two air ambulances presently in service and the new plane will replace one of the older models which has become too expensive to maintain. The total cost for the new plane, which was bought used and refurbished, was $19.6 million, and according to the minister of health Dr. Barrette, the cost will be far outweighed by the number of lives and services the plane will attribute to society.

The service is essential for remote areas and just last year the two air-ambulances transported 1,900 patients which doesn’t include another 1,600 carried by other aircraft from other companies.

The new aircraft will be entering into service in September of this year with a specially trained team of medical experts, and the government hopes to have a second one up and and flying in the near future.
