Quebec Jardin Zoologique Bill Soars

Quebec Jardin Zoologique Bill Soars

The bill for the upkeep of the Quebec Jardin Zoologique in Charlesbourg is skyrocketing even though the last of its residents left in the autumn of 2011.

Six years after the zoo officially shut down to the public, site maintenance is still costing tax payers an awful lot of money.

There are some expenses that were incurred with the arrival of l’Hôtel de glace.

Hydro-Quebec and Gaz Metro bills increased from $82,000 in 2010, to $153,000 in the last year.

The Hôtel de glace’s future is still being negotiated with La Société des établissements de plein air du Québec (Sépaq) for the renewal of the contract. The main argument is over the amount of money spent on the site for the maintenance and services since 2006.
This reached $13M.

Apart from this sum, the Quebec government has also borrowed $23.4M in order to reimburse those owed money by the zoo and to consolidate activities with the city’s Aquarium.
