Québec Pork Industry Hit Hard by Russian Embargo

2014-08-11 Sausage

Quebec City (Quebec) August 10, 2014 – Québec is one of Canada’s largest producers of pork and its by products and may be drastically affected by the embargo which Russia has put on food produce coming from Canada, the US, Australia the EU, and Norway. Almost 90% of food exports towards Russia from Canada are pork and pork products and bring in close to $500 million a year in revenue.

The company most implicated in the production and transformation of pork products, Olymel, says they will look to other markets other than Russia to buy their products, at least as a temporary measure. The company is not happy about the situation but says it will find other solutions. The pork products processed by Olymel come from Vallée-Jonction (Québec) and Red Deer (Alberta) with 65% coming from the Vallée-Jonction farms. The Union des Éleveurs du porc du Québec (the Québec pork producers’ union) states that Russia is the third largest client for the producers and such a sudden restriction could have dire consequences until a new market is found. The Québec pork producers’ union is concerned, since the industry had just come through a pig virus crisis in the last few years and things were getting back on track. The UPA (Union of Agricultural Producers) and Olymel will be looking to Asia as a potential new market and stipulate that no jobs are in jeopardy.

As for the price of pork products, it is still too soon to know if the present embargo will have an effect on the consumer. It all depends on the duration of the embargo and the possibility of finding a new market as soon as possible, according to the pork producers’ union.
