Quebec City (Quebec) Wednesday July 30, 2014 Québec’s Transport Minister, M. Poëti, announced this week that the province is going to install some new electronic speed limit signs which, could be modified according to the weather or amount of trafic, on any particular artery.

The signs would be controlled from a central location and would be adjusted according to current road or rush hour traffic conditions. A pilot project is in place to install at least one each of the signs in Quebec City and Montreal in the fall of this year. The Minister specified that the tests would be carried out preferably on some city boulevards instead of on any major highways.

The Minister was also questioned about increasing certain maximum speed limits on some highways in the province. Comparison was made to New Brunswick where certain autoroutes have their speed limits set at 110kms/hr. His answer was swift to come saying, that it was not a priority and that statistics have shown that the faster the speed allowed, the more accidents occur.

Fact : for every 1km/hr increase in speed the risk for an accident is incresed by 3%.

As for the new speed limit signs, the exact location of the pilot program installations have not yet been revealed.
