Québec Tops Terrorist Acts List in Canada

Ottawa (Ontario) 18 May 2015 – Since 2013 a group known as the Canadian Network for research on Terrorism, Security and Society (TSAS) has put together some statistics regarding terrorist acts which have taken place in Canada from 1960 to 2014 and it would appear that the province of Québec has had 42% of those events. British Columbia comes in second at 30% with Ontario in third place at 19%.

The peak of the attacks in Québec was during the October crisis from 1968 to 1970 when 58% of terrorist actions took place in the province. The FLQ (Front de Libération du Québec) accounted for 142 acts of terrorism including 4 in Ontario and 1 in Alberta during those two years.

In the last 54 years 1,170 terrorist attacks in Canada have caused 450 deaths most of which stem from two air attacks, one in 1965, killing 52 people and another in 1985 (Flight Air India) that took the lives of 329 innocent people.

In Québec since 1960, there have been 512 attempts at terrorism, including bombings, smoke bombs, and armed attacks including the attack on the Québec Parliament by Denis Lortie and the attempted attack on Pauline Marois on her election night celebrations.

The information is being studied for security reasons to determine the patterns and to better understand terrorist crimes in Canada. The research is being run by members of the Universities of British Columbia, Simon Fraser, Carleton, Waterloo and the Université de Montréal.
