Quebec’s Regionalism Evident in Province’s Supermarkets

If Quebec’s nationalism feeds the conflicts between politicians these days during the current election campaign, Quebec’s regionalism seems evident in grocery aisles, according to a survey published earlier on this week by Bombardier and the University of Sherbrooke.

When people do their grocery shopping, Quebecers have a tendancy to choose products for which they feel they have an affinity towards, this therefore, leads to patronising local products.

Local products fare well across Quebec province, but their performance is deceiving elsewhere outside of Quebec.

The research attempted to observe and assess brand equity based on the quality of labels, signs identifying official standards of quality and the origin of a product.

The brand equity was measured with help from a new tool which evaluates the knowledge and image perceived by consumers.

Sub-categories were used for the analysis.

Knowledge is influenced by the visibility and clarity of a logo, while the image is made up of a combination of trust, credibility, honesty, and finally, design.

A brand’s value was then obtained by combining the knowledge and image scores.

From the 20 labels assessed, qualité au Québec, Aliments Québec, Pommes Qualité Québec, Aliments préparés au Québec,Visez santé, and Bio Québec headed the results table.

Quebec residents seem to want to purchase Quebec products above all others.

This can only be a good sign for the local economy.
