Randall Spear’s Quebec City Song Circle

Randall Spear’s Quebec City Song Circle

On Sunday 24th October 2010, between 2pm and 4pm, at the Morrin Centre, Quebec City, a standing-room only crowd enjoyed an afternoon of live music at the eagerly awaited Quebec City Song Circle event.

The seven artists came from Quebec City, Saskatchewan and beyond. Present to entertain Qeubec City music lovers were Anique Granger, Rémi Lortie, Lily Thibodeau, Sylvia Beaudry, Jack Lavoie, Simon Jacobs and Randall Spear.

Each artist, using an acoustic guitar, performed a couple of songs that they had written themselves. Simon Jacobs accompanied some of the artists on his violin.

Half of the songs were in French and half in English.

This was live music at its best. Stripped down and performed in a relaxed manner. It was a privilege to be there. It’s not often you get the chance to get this close to musicians this talented. And all for $10 a throw.

I asked Randall Spear where Song Circles originated from?

Randall ‘From the States. It’s a US thing. Often after a gig, musicians would get together in their hotel room and sit in a circle with one acoustic guitar. Each artist would play a song and then pass the guitar to the next person. Everyone would then comment on each other’s songs offering advice, criticism and encouragement’.

This ethos was very much in evidence on Sunday afternoon, the artists chatting amongst themselves between songs (but loud enough for us to hear) as if the 70 or so strong audience weren’t there. Very comfortable. Very relaxed. Very good.

Towards the end of the event, two students from the Cégep de Sainte-Foy performed a couple of songs they had written.

A great start to their career. No nerves on show either.

Once the Song Circle came to an end, Randall Spear thanked everyone the artists for taking part, the crowd for turning out and the team at the Morrin Centre for providing the venue and running the event.

Randall also mentioned that there would be another Song Circle on Sunday 21st November 2010. Same time. same place. Can’t wait.

After the show, Simon Jacobs posted this as his Facebook status…

‘is just recovering after a very successful, standing room only song circle event at the Morrin Centre. A big thanks to Randall Spear and guests. Boy, it’s fun to play again!’
I think our response to that is a very resounding
‘Boy, it was fun to be there! Thanks for a great afternoon’s entertainment.’
