Royal Wedding Fever Hots Up In Quebec City

by Andrew Greenfield

So today’s the day, Friday 29th April 2011.

The much anticipated joining in matrimony of William Arthur Philip Louis and Catherine Elizabeth Middleton took place earlier today in London, England (as if we didn’t know).

The topic has been debated worldwide for months and yesterday, April 28th, was Quebec City’s turn to get in on the act.

A panel of British ex-pats was invited to the studio by Quebec City’s CBC Radio One Breakway Show to discuss the (then) forthcoming nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Diana, Princess of Wales, Prince Charles, The Queen, the quaintness of celebratory street parties and all manner of Royal Family business.

The panel, all residents of Quebec City, included Duncan Flowers (originally from London), Sarah Huffman (originally from Hampshire) and I.

We arrived early and, much to the delight and amazement of the CBC staff and presenter Rachelle Solomon,  took over the studio and promptly began to enjoy a Royal Wedding street party of our very own.

Union Flags, bags, paper plates, mugs, styrofoam cups, tiaras and sausage rolls were very much in evidence.

The discussion, aired on CBC Radio One, 104.7 FM at 5pm on Thursday 28th April 2011 was great fun to participate in.

All involved agreed that regardless of whether people were Royalists or not, no one could argue that the British Royal Family is big business and a box office draw.

The wedding itself allegedly being watched by a worldwide audience of over 2 billion people.

For more info about the actual event itself, MacLean’s seem to have got it all pretty much covered.
