RTC spends $500,000 on advertising per year

Quebec City (Quebec) 06 September, 2014 – Paul Shoiry, ‘surprised’ at the RTC’s annual advertising spend.

In the context of declining services, it is ‘surprising’ that the Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) spends $ 500,000 a year on contracts with an advertising agency to improve its image with the public; so believes Paul Shoiry, leader of the opposition at city hall.

“I do not see why such sums of money dedicated to public transit are used by the RTC to improve its image. All this in a context of declining services, for example the number 16 bus route”, lamented Shoiry.

The RTC has recently issued a tender to hire an advertising agency. The contract, scheduled to begin on January 1, 2015, can run for four years for a total cost of approximately two million dollars.

When asked in an afternoon briefing, Quebec City Mayor Régis Labeaume downplayed the story. “Calm down. This is the normal annual budget (advertising). There is no increase in budget. The organization must promote products; it needs customers,” he said.
