Rue Saint-Jean: Contact Musique Closes its Doors

Quebec City (Quebec) 26 July 2015 – An institution of the Faubourg Saint-Jean-Baptiste is closing: Contact Musique is liquidating its inventory before turning the page on 39 years of presence on the rue Saint-Jean.

The business sold musical instruments, sheet music and accessories for musicians.  Its closing adds to the list of prominent businesses in the area that have closed their doors in the recent months, following Copies du Faubourg and the Colisée du Livre.

Reached Friday, the owner of Contact Musique, Jules Warren cited the difficult economic environment for businesses like his in the era of global competition brought about by online trading. “People look for the best prices and profit margins are very slim,” he notes.

Contact Musique had a loyal customer base. “It was nice to have loyal customers, buying a musical instrument, it’s not like groceries where you go every week,” Warren added.

The decision to close was difficult to take, admits Warren. But now that it’s done, he prefers to look to the future. It must be said that being the owner of the building that houses the trade in 578, rue Saint-Jean, he has no pressure to leave quickly.

The closing date for the end of August and could move. “We’ll improvise, like we do so often with music,” he said.
