Segway ride might cost SEPAQ some money

Back in July of 2012 a gentleman by the name of Claude Sirois was riding a Segway when he hit a tree stump and damaged his hip; sound strange? It all happened like this.

During the summer of 2012 the provincial park in Duchesnay, which is run by the Government agency known as SEPAQ, (Québec Parks and Recreation) was offering excursions through the woods with the use of a Segway, that two wheeled gizmo that you stand on and, if you keep your balance, can roll around just about anywhere with very little physical exertion.

After a brief lesson and a few trials by a guide-instructor you could embark on a Segway hike through the woods on a fairly well beaten path covered in dry soil and stone screening. M. Sirois was up to the challenge and after a couple of ‘road tests’ was ready to join a group for his first trip on his Segway.

Well into the ride M. Sirois’ Segway hit a small tree stump which was on the edge of the trail causing his Segway to brutally turn right and throw him off the vehicle into the brush. Upon hitting the ground the man felt his hip crack under the sudden unplanned landing and was unable to stand up after the crash.

He was taken away by ambulance, spent two days in hospital repairing the damaged hip and then had to spend 3½ months in convalescence at home and away from his job.

Because of the circumstances of the accident M. Sirois is suing the SEPAQ and the park for $109,000 claiming that the path where the Segways were used should have been better adapted to the vehicles than it was, stating that if the tree stump had not been there, the incident would never have happened.

We’ll keep you updated as to what the outcome is.
