Should cost less this winter to get your two feet in the sand

Quebec City residents will have lots of choice this winter for their favorite destinations down south, whether it’s the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Mexico or even Florida. They’ll be spoiled with approximately 45 flights a week from several different airlines which should bring down prices and improve accommodations.

Sandy_feetThe two biggest carriers out of Quebec City are Sunwing Vacations and Transat, and there will be a fierce battle this year to encourage travellers to make a choice based on price and services offered. Up until five years ago Transat dominated the market with 50%, but has since become the second most important after Sunwing which now has 37% as compared to Transat’s 35%.Sunwing expects to breech the $1.5 billion mark this year as compared to last year’s $70 million by increasing the number of seats available to 80,000 in the capital city bringing the total for the province to 340,000.

Transat has actually lost money in the last four years flying out of Quebec City but has increased its total profits in the last quarter of 2013 allowing them to be once again a strong contender. Transat is offering special tours with their flights this year like two separate destinations for the same ticket, meaning you could arrive in Punta Cana and leave from Santo Domingo for example.

More competition coming.

Westjet vacations already has two flights a week out of Quebec City going to Cancun and Fort Lauderdale and offers 35 other destinations out of Toronto by taking their 6:30 flight to the big city. The company has just bought 65 new Boeing 737 aircraft to increase its holiday destination possibilities.

A new player Red/ Rouge, an Air Canada affiliate, also flies out of Quebec City under the Air Canada Vacations banner so this winter should see some great bargains for the Canadian “snowbirds” and you won’t even have to stand in line if you reserve everything on-line.
