Snowboard Jamboree: Where Sport Meets Art

PRESS RELEASE – For Immediate Release

An opening ceremony where sport meets art

Canadian rapper Classified will be in Québec City for the festivities

Québec City, Thursday, January 17, 2013 – As part of the Mazda Snowboard FIS World Championships presented Vidéotron, Îlot Fleurie in downtown Québec City will be looking its best from 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 19 as it gears up to host the opening ceremony that will mark the official start of festivities. A crowd of thousands will be treated to a not-to-be-missed blend of art and extreme sports. With 46 nations to be presented, a Big Air final featuring the world’s best boarders, brand-new multimedia projections and fireworks, an all-new Stairsmasters, and Canadian rapper Classified—all set to a spectacular backdrop—it promises to be a night to remember!

Bursting with pride, brimming with thrills

Orchestrated by the organizing committee with the help of director Ghislain Turcotte, the World Championships opening ceremony will be held in the Big Air zone itself, giving crowds a whole new perspective on proceedings. Just like with the Olympic Games, representatives from 46 countries will be spotlighted, set to a multimedia projection featuring a round-the-world trip in sound and pictures. I.No, an up-and-coming Québec City band, will then give their take on the national anthem. Incredibly powerful lights will create new textures and wow crowds throughout the celebrations, promising pride, thrills, and spills from start to finish!

Boarders at work

The final of the FIS Big Air World Championships presented by Vidéotron will then showcase the world’s top snowboarders. Cheered on by a crowd of adrenalin junkies, athletes will strut their stuff on a 40 m jump, giving their all for a place on the podium. The medal ceremony will have plenty of fireworks of its own, while music will have the crowd on its feet before the winning video clips are unveiled as part of a new Stairsmasters presented by Tremblay Beer formula that saw over 30 professional and amateur boarders submit their best street-riding videos to the jury. In all, 10 specially selected videos will be projected onto the big screens, with $15,000 ready to be claimed in prizes! To find out more about Stairsmasters and to watch videos, visit

A final with the rapper Classified

Canadian hip-hop artist Classified will round out the evening with tunes from what he calls his “most musical album yet” (release date: January 22). Right before the start of his Canadian tour, the rapper will stop off in Québec City for a free show that will end the opening ceremony for the 10th FIS Snowboard World Championships in style. Renowned around the world for his edgy, pun-filled lyrics Classified will be accompanied on stage at Îlot Fleurie by three other musicians, ready to have the crowd warmed up and on its feet with their greatest hits.
