SSQ Marathon des Deux-Rives 2012

SSQ Marathon des Deux-Rives 2012

This year, the SSQ’s Marathon des Deux-Rives is exceeding every precedent set, as seen by the number of participants signed up to take part.

This coming weekend, more than 11,000 runners are scheduled to run through Lévis and Quebec City. This is a 15% rise on last year’s numbers.

The marked increase in participation is due to two factors: First of all, the registration of European, South-American, and Asian countries has exploded this year. Secondly, the number of Quebec runners has climbed again, seeing a new participation record for this marathon.

Every year, more than half of the participants are running their first marathon. This helps the event’s reputation.

They are the best ambassadors because they talk of their experience and it attracts more people each year.

Amongst the improvements to the 15th edition, Courir à Québec decided to move two Sunday races to the Saturday. These are the 5km and youth race.

These changes allow parents, often runners as well, to follow their kids’ performances.

Changing the dates also gives the organizers a bit more time to cope with the logistics.

The Course des Étoiles (Friday 8 pm), the half-marathon (Sunday), the marathon (Sunday), and the 10km (Sunday) revert back to the normal schedule.

Marathon runners will be hoping to get a race in this year, last year’s marathon having been cancelled due to bad weather brought to the region by Hurricane Irene.
