Ste-Foy Sings at Manoir Archer

Ste-Foy Sings at Manoir Archer

By Kayla Duran-Gingras (Grade 6 Ste-Foy Elementary student) and Jason Enlow

Students from Ste–Foy Elementary School in Quebec City (Québec) continued a Christmas tradition that began last year, singing Christmas carols at Manoir Archer. On December 15, after a busy day at school, forty students from Pre-kindergarten to Grade 6 braved the slushy walk to the retirement home across the street. The kids were accompanied by dedicated and watchful daycare staff. Upon their arrival at Manoir Archer, they were quickly escorted to the main meeting room where an anxious audience was already waiting to hear them.

Students practiced half an hour every day during the weeks leading up to the concert. They were ready to put on a great show.  The Ste-Foy Elementary carollers sang the following songs: “Jingle Bell Rock”, “Il est né le divine enfant”, “White Christmas”, “Jingle Bells”, “Noël des enfants”, and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. Colette Arsenault, the piano teacher at Ste-Foy Elementary, accompanied the students.

Judy Thorne, one of the daycare supervisors, had this to say, “It was very lovely; people were touched. The director general had tears in his eyes. It was a very beautiful performance.” It was so beautiful that the residents asked the children to sing twice. Hélène Frechette is in charge of the daycare, she said that “A parent called me earlier in the week and she offered to bake chocolate chip cookies and banana bread for everyone.” Following the concert, students and staff spoke with the residents while they all enjoyed the baked goods.

Plans for next year are already in the works. Michelle Moisan, the Resident Director at Manoir Archer, is hoping to have the Ste-Foy Elementary daycare choir back to sing, but not just after school, during lunch as well. Afterwards everyone will sit down to eat together in the dining room. Some traditions keep getting better and better!
