Sweeney Todd Coming to Québec

The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is coming to Le Capitole

This fall, the Capitole de Québec will host the world premiere of a French adaptation of the famous classic Sweeney Todd, an impressive musical theater of twisted taste, which will reunite 19 artists on stage and promises to be the event of this fall in Quebec.

This bold endeavor is done by Decibel, a young Quebec company which, after producing the last edition of La nuit blanche for the Quebec Winter Carnival, which aims to become the producer of shows of a ” new kind “, including integrated musicals and circus arts .

For his first great work, the artistic director Louis Morin had the idea to join with Just for Laughs to recreate in French a Broadway hit , which will be performed in Quebec City from October 28 to November 8, 2014 at the Capitol Theatre (tickets are already on sale ) . Due to the dark humor of the show, they are already thinking of inviting the spectators to come in costume on the night of Halloween …

The show will then be required to take the road to Montreal, with also the possibility of ending up in Europe. There is even talk of bringing Sweeney Todd on Broadway in a new Quebec English version.

The comedy with enormous success, Sweeney Todd, has won forty awards and nominations , including eight Tony Awards since its original creation in 1979 by Stephen Sondheim , the man behind the lyrics of West Side Story.

Black humor is at the center of Sweeney Todd , which transports the viewer into a fantasy world in a vengeful London . It is also the name of a serial killer of English folklore whose story has resulted in many adaptations to the theater and cinema. We remember the 2007 film adaptation starring Johnny Depp in the lead role.

The play features a London barber who, with cruelty, madness and revenge, slices the throats of his customers.

On stage, there will be ten musicians under the direction of William St- Laurent ( Singing in the Rain and Hairspray ) and nine actors , including Renaud Paradis, in the role of the evil Sweene, Stéphanie Lapointe ( Aurora, Les Filles de Caleb ), Jean Petitclerc ( Rams , 19-2 ) and singer Katee Julien .

Two roles have not yet been assigned, that of Adolpho Pirelli (male, tenor, 30-45 years) and the beggar (female, soprano); auditions will be held on April 26 in Quebec City, and the nextday in Montreal : auditions@theatredecibel.com .
