The Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL) Offers its Condolences and Denounces Intolerance

WENDAKE, QC, Jan. 31, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ – Shocked by the act of hate committed last Sunday night against the Quebec Muslim Community, Ghislain Picard, Chief of the AFNQL, on behalf of the Chiefs of Quebec’s First Nations, offers prayers and deepest condolences to the families and to the tragically grieving community.

The Chiefs of the AFNQL, gathered in assembly today in Wendake, Quebec, held this morning a minute of silence in memory of the victims and their loved ones.

Chief Picard called for tolerance and encourages governments to tackle with courage the racism that plagues our society.

“Time has come to show courage and strength in addressing the horrors of intolerances or any form of discrimination and racism which compromise the future of our societies. To do so, all political leaders must accept to refer to these social ills by name, point at them and denounce them publicly and vehemently, at the risk of offending the proponents of inaction”, stated Ghislain Picard.

Grand Chief Konrad Sioui, host of the Chiefs’ meeting on his ancestral territory, also denounced the cruelty of this act. “These sad events remind us that as leaders, it is our responsibility to fight ignorance and intolerance, just as it is our duty to fight against several other scourges, including violence and suicide” he added, in the context of the Suicide Prevention Week.
