The spirit of Christmas arrives at the Grand Théatre in Quebec City

By Job Patstone

It’s now official; the Christmas season has been launched in Quebec City.

Last night we were invited to assist at a Christmas variety show which brought together some renowned Québec artists for an evening of jokes, Christmas Carols and mostly good fun.  The show entitled “Noël avec les Idoles”, was presented at the Grand Théatre to a local audience of mostly middle aged to golden agers as the artists  themselves were popular back in the 60’s and 70’s.

To bring the audience into the Christmas spirit the MC for the night, Mario Lirette, (AKA Santa Claus) had everyone laughing while he presented such singers as Claude Valade, Michèle Richard and Patrick Zabé, all well known Québec performers, to sing their versions of all the classic carols we’re used to hearing around this time of year.

Joining the more well known aforementioned stars were Gilles Girard, from the Group ‘Les Classels”, Jacques Salvail and last but not least Tony Masarelli.

We heard the old standards like, ‘Noel Blanc’, Petit Papa Noel” and Vive le Vent (a French rendition of Jingle Bells) among others, all pulled off in a well rehearsed although sometimes ad-libbed spectacle.

Of course music is the international language, so whether they sang in French or English the crowd was encouraged to participate whenever they could.

Santa Claus himself wasn’t exactly your regular Santa, with his dry but sometimes niche jokes, but this was an adult show after all.

The second half of the show was about each artist telling a story of his or her best or worst Christmas and there was a contest for a lucky ticket holder to win a supper with Michèle Richard at her residence in St. Sauver, all expenses paid.

The group wished everyone a Joyeux Noël and a healthy 2018 at the end of the show.
