Three candidates in the race to take Denis Brière’s spot at the head of Université Laval

The race for the new Chancellor has officially begun at Université Laval. Three candidates are in line, set to follow President Denis Brière.

The nomination period ended on Thursday and Université Laval announced the candidates on Friday.

The candidates  are:

Eric Bauce, the current Executive Vice-President,

Sophie D’Amours, former Vice-President of Research,

Michel Gendron, Dean of the Faculty of Administration.

Majority required

Candidates will have until April 26, the day of the election, to campaign.

The next chancellor will be elected by the electoral college, which is composed of the 145 members based on the board of directors, the members of the university council and the voting members of the study, research and student affairs commissions.

To be elected, the candidate will have to win the majority of votes, which may require several rounds.

No women

Denis Brière will leave on May 31, after 10 years as head of Université Laval. His salary is $ 330,000, which he can keep for a certain period if he remains employed by the University.

In the Quebec university network, only the University of Sherbrooke has a process of election similar to that of Université Laval, where a woman has yet to be elected as the head of the institution.
