TSB probes minor freight train derailment in Montreal

MONTREAL — The Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into a minor trail derailment in Montreal on Thursday involving a Canadian Pacific train.

Some of the empty wagons of a freight train derailed and one of the cars landed close to a residential building in the city’s east end.

Montreal police said there were no injuries, traffic snarls or spill of any goods or substances.

The TSB said it has dispatched investigators to determine the circumstances of the derailment, which occurred at a low speed.

Mayor Denis Coderre said he wants to know about the state of the rail track in the area and if the derailment was due to vandalism.

Coderre says he looks forward to discussing rail safety with the new federal transportation minister, who is expected to be named by Prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau next week.
