Two Homes Ravaged by Flames

According to neighbours, at least three blasts could be heard when the fire started.

Saint-Hyacinthe – a huge fire destroyed two houses on rue du Couvent-de-Lorette in Saint-Hyacinthe early Saturday morning.

The flames started at around 1:45am outside the first residence and spread to the attic of the residence next door.

Two vehicles were also destroyed in the fire.  According to Daniel Dubois, the Director of service for fire-safety in Saint-Hyacinthe, the smoke-detector quickly awoke residents.

According to neighbours, at least three blasts could be heard when the fire started.  A propane tank, located between the two houses, caused firefighters to intervene with caution.

They had to allow  the propane to burn in an effort to empty the tanks completely.  A general alarm was necessary in order to put out the fire, which does not appear to be a criminal act, according to the initial investigation of firefighters.

There was considerable damage done, which will cost around $700,000.  A more in-depth investigation was held later this morning to confirm the cause of the fire.
