Vélirium gears up for an 11th edition!

International Mountain Bike Festival and UCI World Cup presented by Shimano

Québec City, Wednesday, August 7, 2013 – There’s something in the air in downtown Québec City and at Mont-Sainte-Anne just hours before the festivities surrounding Vélirium presented by Vidéotron, which runs from August 8 to 11! Everything’s in place for the 11th edition of an event that no mountain bike fan wants to miss. Downtown or out on the mountain, the lineup for Vélirium 2013 will wow the crowds as the sporting elite from 30 countries comes to do battle at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano and City8 presented by Vidéotron, the urban event of the year that’s been given silver event status by the prestigious Freeride Mountain Bike World Tour (FMB).

Intense to the max
“The Mont-Sainte-Anne event has been on the UCI calendar since 1991 and we’ve decided to pack Vélirium into a long weekend this year to ramp up the intensity and make sure the crowds are right in the thick of the action from start to finish,” explains Yves Blouin, chairman of Corporation Coupe du monde de vélo de montagne Mont-Sainte-Anne. And from Thursday intense will be the right word as City8, a dirt and freestyle event, comes to Québec for the first time!

Then the action moves to the mountain on Saturday with the UCI Cross-Country World Cup, featuring athletes from Québec and the rest of Canada on a redesigned 4 km course that cuts right through the Exhibitors’ Village. “I always look forward to racing at Mont-Sainte-Anne in front of a Canadian crowd,” says Catharine Pendrel, a Cross-Country rider from New Brunswick. “The atmosphere and organization surprise me every time and the course is one of the toughest in the World Cup. It’s fun for me to welcome the other World Cup riders to Mont-Sainte-Anne.” As for local favourite Marie-Hélène Prémont, the new mom plans on being at the mountain to cheer on her fellow racers: “I won’t be competing this year, but I’ll definitely be there to cheer on my teammates.”

To end the weekend on a high this Sunday, Raid Vélo Mag, a not-to-be-missed event for amateur cyclists, will roll out its 30 km, 60 km, and 80 km versions, with close to 500 racers expected to cross the start line. The 30 km race is perfect for cyclists just getting started with Cross Country.

Then right after, the UCI Downhill World Cup presented by Vidéotron will round out the weekend of competition. With a finish line 100 m further up the mountain than in previous years and an end to the course that features two new jumps, this year’s finale promises to be even more spectacular than usual!
