VEQ Winds of Change November 2010

VEQ Winds of Change November 2010

On Thursday November 4th 2010, a group of newcomers to Quebec City came together with residents well down the road in the transition making process and and a few seasoned Quebec City veterans.

The ‘Winds of Change Workshop’ event, hosted and organised by the Voice of English speaking Quebec, attracted around 20 or so participants.

We kicked off with a powerpoint presentation delivered by staff from the Jeffrey Hale Hospital. It covered many of the aspects involved when changing culture.

We learnt that the cultural change involves a honeymoon phase, a culture shock, a period of acceptance and then one of adaptation.

Very informative and well delivered.

You could tell just by the chatter that the attendees were all at different stages of this process.

If was worthwhile being there just to hear the experiences of others and realise that we were not alone. At any stage of the process.

We were privileged to hear of a success story from Sharon MacLeod.
Sharon spoke of her move from California, job search, involvement with the Quebec Art Company and the settling in period.

She also urged those present to get involved with both the Francophone and Anglophone communities and do as much as possible to integrate into the society here. This included learning French as soon as possible – a comment echoed by the VEQ staff and others in the audience.

The VEQ then explained about their twinning project whereby an English speaker is paired with a French speaker and they meet up to chat about all things Quebec, share cultural differences and learn each others languages.

The evening finished off with everyone being given a chance to mingle and get to know each other.

As ever, an excellent event put on by the team from the Voice of English-speaking Quebec.
