At the heart of Deborah Jeans is her ability to help people find their singing voices and to experience joy through the art of singing.  Deborah began to sing at a very early age in her native Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where she received her early musical education and exposure to solo singing.  Later, she graduated from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Music, with a Bachelor’s degree in voice performance and a diploma in operatic literature and performance.  She was awarded the Josephine Harper Award as the most outstanding female singer in her graduating year.  A winner of a number of competitions and awards, among them study grants from the Canada Counsel, Deborah Jeans studied voice and interpretation of classical repertoire in Rome, New York and Austria.  Her performance credits include the Canadian Opera Company, Vancouver Opera Association, Pacific Opera Victoria and Opera-in-Concert, Toronto.

In Toronto, Ms. Jeans operated Viva Voce Voice Studio for sixteen years.   Some of her former students are graduates of McGill University, University of Western Ontario, Queen’s University and the University of British Columbia.  A passion for the French language and culture brought her to Quebec City two years ago, where she opened a voice studio known as Viva Voce Voix, studio vocal/Viva Voce Voix, voice studio.

Having Deborah Jeans’ help to formulate my early training as a singer was the best thing that could have happened to me! Deborah helped me to recognize my own potential abilities and also to believe in myself.  She taught me the skills I would later use in my craft as a performer.  Sensitive, caring teachers like Deborah Jeans are almost impossible to find!
Ann Rowe, Canadian soprano living and working in Salzburg, Austria

Deborah Jeans was my first voice teacher.  She helped me to discover my voice and opened it to a powerful, focused sound of more than two and a half octaves, capable of singing with many colours. She also recognized right away that I was a visual learner, so she tailored our lessons to my way of learning and processing information, something that made the process of learning to sing so much easier for me.

Deborah Jeans is a talented educator and a strong force in the Canadian vocal scene. I feel that my work with her is one of the reasons I can now call myself a professional singer.
Ryan Field, Canadian actor (Stratford Festival 2011) & singer

” Deborah Jeans prepares her students from the ground up. The intensive work we did in preparing for my University auditions was as much about confidence, positivity and expression as it was about vocal technique and musicality. She did as much work outside our lessons as I did: printing off histories of the songs and composers, staging mock auditions and even looking into the specific programs I would be applying for. When I left for school she handed me a hefty package of music appropriate for my voice type and skill level that I could impress my new teacher with. In taking a wholistic approach to her students she bolsters them against the anxiety of the admissions process and prepares them for success. Deborah Jeans is patient, enthusiastic, unwavering in her support and beautifully talented. ”
